I recollect that I needed to set the GRUB location but didn't have any kickback from the installer - on my 20.04 install I've got a / partition under grub is installed in /boot/grub. Each time this produced a warning message from the installer about the missing EFI partition (I think to the effect that the system may not boot without it) which I ignored. When I did the real install I did the partitioning myself and omitted the EFI one. Both times, to the best of my memory, the installer if left to its own devices would create an EFI partition when I did an automatic install as a test run. I had this set in BIOS to legacy BIOS mode as when I was installing 16.04 I still had W7 hanging around and it wouldn't play nice with EFI. Not an exact parallel as this was 20.04 (and 16.04 before that) on a home built PC. If its useful, the disk was auto-formatted as GPT, MBR option I could not see anywhere. seems to be new for Grub(?), nor the EFI partition.Ĭan someone quickly ELI5 why this is happening (and why it only seems to happen on Ubuntu)?

I kinda went distro hopping with that PC to test several distros and neither Fedora, nor Kubuntu did either create this 1MB bios grub thingy, which. The bios_grub partition indicates that this is indeed a BIOS legacy PC, but why the hell is there an EFI Partition too? I didnt find any answers on Google and Ubuntu is the only system that did that. > And a 540 MB fat32 EFI System Partition, and THAT is the ultimate headscratcher for me

> 1MB bios_grub (That wasnt needed when I installed Fedora, which also uses Grub) Then, I really didnt want to fiddle around with it anymore, so I let the auto-installer do its thing and now my partitions look like this: However, Ubuntu then gave me the famous "couldnt install Grub on /dev/sda/" error repeatedly, no matter what I did.Īnd yes, sda really was the internal SSD, not the USB stick or something else. I normally do all the partitioning myself, so I created / as EXT4, a swap partition because Im used to it and I THOUGHT that was it, because Fedora 33 worked that way on the same machine (left out EFI of course, since this is a BIOS machine without any UEFI compatibility mode). Note, this isnt my first Linux install, but this got me to scratch my head. I had a hard time installing Ubuntu 20.10 on an ancient Thinkpad T410. The CSS on /r/Ubuntu is an on going development keeping up to date with the latest Ubuntu Unity theme.Īdditionally, feel free to message us if your (non-spam!) link/post is accidentally trapped in our spam filter, and we'll sort it out.
